Cowherd’s Westbrook bias obvious as pundit cites OKC Thunder KD era placed him behind Russ
Colin Cowherd favorite target is OKC Thunder superstar Russell Westbrook but spinning facts into untruths to make a point is taking things too far.
For OKC Thunder fans, even those who question Russell Westbrook‘s choices in style of play can see Colin Cowherd has an ongoing vendetta against the star. Perhaps Cowherd just elects to pursue that opinion because it garners attention and subsequently listeners and views. But, the pundit often goes too far and frequently spins his arguments to fit his stance.
For example, in a recent show, he focused on Kevin Durant and his place in the NBA. During the program, he cites KD as always being in second. Gee, how original – if anyone saw the Sports Illustrated cover story of 2013 you relate to this point and why I’m citing it as being unoriginal.
What makes this Cowherd commentary particularly annoying is he states Durant was never viewed as the top dog in OKC. That’s preposterous! KD wasn’t just the favored child in the family he sat back while Westbrook took all the hits whenever something failed.
To be clear, in his entire tenure with OKC once — ONCE— the media was negative toward him and this ended up with a retraction and an apology to the star. Can you even imagine the number of apologies which would be required if the media elected to apologize for the number of times Westbrook was blamed during the KD-Westbrook era?
Stuart Ballard of The Express transcribed Cowherd’s commentary:
"“For his entire life of basketball, Kevin Durant has finished second. “He did not go number one in the draft, Kevin Durant went behind Greg Oden. Then he goes to Oklahoma City and Sam Presti puts his arms around Westbrook over Kevin Durant. “Then he goes to Golden State where he’s clearly the best player, but he’ll never be as popular as Steph. “For 10 years, despite his dominance, there’s LeBron. He’s number two. “Even at Nike. His contract? Second best.”"

I’m not suggesting Durant hasn’t surpassed LeBron James as the top player in the NBA. Nor am I suggesting the Warriors aren’t Stephen Curry‘s team, they are. Plus, if you’ve followed my power rankings and preseason picks my stance since preseason of 2018-19 was KD would join forces (likely with Kyrie Irving) and head to one of the two New York teams depending on who the Knicks got in the draft.
But, to suggest KD’s days in Oklahoma City were viewed as anything other than Durant’s team is ridiculous. Prior to Durant’s deflection to Oakland most felt Westbrook was the more likely star who would leave OKC in free agency and that ideology was based on the fact the OKC Thunder WAS KEVIN DURANT’s team.
I get it — Westbrook is Cowherd’s golden egg. If he didn’t have the Brodie to use as his main topic to dump on he’d actually have to go find another star to level his criticism on and build shows around.
The point is — go ahead Colin and get your hits and views, but at least be accurate in your statements.
