Mock Draft 3.0 – Predicting how the dominoes fall, with view to fit, shifts, and OKC Thunder best bet
After two consecutive picks which could still turn the draft upside down the sixth pick veers back to what I anticipated occurring prior to all the upheaval of the past few weeks. Albeit, I’m still not certain the better choice here isn’t Coby White from an overall talent standpoint (much like I felt De’Aaron Fox was the more talented choice over Lonzo Ball).
In addition, the injury to Darius Garland so early in his College campaign leads to questions of his true ability. That said, Kyrie Irving also suffered a similar situation only playing 11 NCAA games and wasn’t adversely affected when he hit the pros and Culver has impressed in workouts.
There is also the matter of whispered promises by the Suns to Garland.
More importantly with Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, Kelly Oubre and T.J. Warren all capable of scoring the better fit here truly is Garland. Eight consecutive years of lottery picks has to be wearing thin in Phoenix and the one key piece still missing is a quarterback to run the show. Garland would fit that need and put him in the same timeline as the two key stars (Booker/Ayton).
With Booker carrying way too much of the load adding a point guard who’ll be happy to fill the role of playmaker rather than a shoot first point makes this a draft pick where the selecting team not only lands a talent but one which fills a precise role as well.
If Garland or White isn’t the pick then keep your eyes peeled for Kemba Walker to Phoenix banter gaining traction. This will be James Jones first summer to make an impact, but my thinking is he elects to add veteran free agents to help build the culture he desires with the Suns.
