Lack of depth:
The Wizards cupboard isn’t bare but with the exits of Trevor Ariza, Jeff Green, Jabari Parker, Bobby Portis and the trade of Tomas Satoransky Washington’s depth took a massive hit. Only six players including Wall return. The problem is with so much money tied up in their two contracts, there isn’t disposable income to spend on restocking.
Washington’s development staff will be busy trying to expedite the growth of the rookies and young players picked up this summer via the draft, trades and free agency. Thomas Bryant who showed glimpses last season may also take another step.
Defensive rebounding and 3-point shooting:
Washington ranked 27th in defensive rebounding and lost eight of its top 10 defensive rebounders. Likewise, the club ranked 26th in perimeter efficiency and lost nine of its 10 most efficient 3-point shooters.
Although Davis Bertans will offset some of the perimeter needs and potentially Thomas and Miles could rediscover their touch. Even then the Wizards will be in tough to match last season’s production.
Suffice to say, the situation in Washington is bleak and will require patience and likely a bit of luck if the team hopes to get out from under there current malaise in the short term.
