Ferguson’s job to lose:
At the start of training camp, you’ll recall Donovan made a point of loudly proclaiming his support for Ferguson ensuring there wasn’t any confusion in the media. Coaches often do this to help build the confidence of young stars.
Therefore, putting the two youngsters in a battle to win the role or gain valuable playing time over the other could have a negative effect. The most concerning would be if it lessened their confidence.
For as much as this is a competitive sport, egos play a part in the equation. I point you to last season’s Boston Celtics as a perfect example of how quickly a locker room can be lost when ego’s get involved and the effect it has when those issues seep onto the hardwood.
The OKC Thunder has never had these issues (at least not that we’re aware of) plus the culture and identity is strong. Still, it’s a high wire act and one Billy Donovan may not be willing to walk in the last year of his contract and with the franchise in flux.
