OKC Thunder waive Devon Hall to free up roster slot.
The OKC Thunder have waived Devon Hall to make room for Kevin Hervey.
The OKC Thunder signed Kevin Hervey to a two-way deal. In order to do this, they had to waive two-way guard Devon Hall. This was a smart move by the Thunder and the reason is multidimensional.
Firstly, Hall has been with the varsity team most of the season. He has done very little, even when he was able to get on the court. Hall played five games, averaging 1.0 points and 0.6 assists per game. However, he has too much competition at guard and he has no obvious talent which puts him above any of the other players.
Due to the recent spate of injuries with Hamidou Diallo and Terrance Ferguson out, adding to the suspension of Deonte Burton and the continued absence of Andre Roberson, the Thunder promoted Luguentz Dort. His defensive play has been nothing short of spectacular.
Despite his poor shooting from deep, Dort has been a revelation. He has taken on some of the biggest names in the NBA and held his own, playing 17.3 minutes per game since his promotion. As a result, Hall was pushed further down the pecking order.

However, the problem for Hall runs deeper than that. He is only 6’2″ in height. The OKC Thunder, on their recent road trip, had to start Darius Bazely against the Utah Jazz because Danilo Gallinari was out with an ankle injury. This meant the Thunder were thin on the bench for players to play the forward position.
This is where the 6’9″ Kevin Hervey comes in. He can play both forward positions on the court and is a reasonable outside shooter which is crucial for floor spacing. Hall can only play the guard positions, which does not help the Thunder going forward.
There is also the possibility that Thunder GM could be getting close to a deal for Gallinari and he has inked Hervey as a safety net. Even if this is not the case, Hall was a project who was not going to work out.
