Leadership and Mentorship:

Paul’s effect on the team is palpable. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was viewed as a blue-chip prospect with the potential to develop into an All-Star. His ascent this season is in part due to his own offseason work and natural talent. However, the tangible effect of Chris Paul on the sophomore’s rapid rise is obvious.

The duo spends time off the court together and it’s impossible to witness a game where the pair aren’t discussing a play, a defensive action or engaged on the bench. Arguably his greatest effect has been on Dennis Schroder. Last season the German often seemed more invested in getting his points up than in running the reserve unit. This season Schroder is visibly happy and effusive in his praise of the vet.

It’s a common sight to witness Paul pull aside Darius Bazley, Luguentz Dort or any of the youngsters on the club. He’s sharing his knowledge, motivating each player and leading by example.

All teams take on an identity with it often being that of the head coach. But, in the case of the OKC Thunder, we’d be hard-pressed not to cite CP3 and his attributes and character which permeate the club. The swagger and clutch time prowess this team possesses ties directly back to Paul and their belief in him.
