OKC Thunder: How a fly over state has been caught in the middle of NBA History
By Rylan Stiles
Recent history:
How about the Golden State Warriors dynasty? You know, the team that won the most games in a single season? The three rings in four years dynasty? Yeah, Oklahoma City’s fingerprints are all over that historic run.
Sadly, it is for heartbreaking reasons. From the half-court Steph Curry dagger in one of the most memorable regular-season games of all time to the blown 3-1 lead, with it all boiling over to Kevin Durant skipping town in favor of signing with the Golden State Warriors in one of the weakest moves in basketball history.

The birth of the potential Clippers dynasty that brought Kawhi to La La Land, only for the Hollywood Underdogs instead of the flashy Lakers? Yeah, that is courtesy of the OKC Thunder as well, trading Paul George for a historic haul allowing the Clips to secure Kawhi Leonard.
History just seems to have its eye on Oklahoma City. The city, the state, and the organization can not escape it, even if they wanted to. As recently as four weeks ago the OKC Thunder found themselves in the spotlight when the Utah Jazz came to town with a pair of players that tested positive for COVID-19, that emptied an arena, and postponed an NBA season moments before the ball was tipped.
The OKC Thunder, in less than 20 years, has strung together more iconic, and legendary moments, games, players, and conversations, than most NBA Franchises have–And it all happened right here, in flyover Oklahoma.
So when you hear Oklahoma, you can still think of all those outdated preconceived notions about the State, but I will think History. I will think of a city on the rise. I will think of the Plaza District, Bricktown, the local eateries, the bright lights, the local art scene, and so much more.
