OKC Thunder: Revisiting Jerami Grant trade, one-year later
Gallinari perfect fit with Thunder:
As for that sinking ship, Grant was happy to get off… they trail the Nuggets by 2.5 games, and although a long shot could overtake Denver in the bubble.
And the man who took his starting spot is Danilo Gallinari who is thriving with his new club posting stellar offense as TI recently detailed (click the box below). He’s part of the Clutch Time Killer lineup and LOVES playing in OKC.
If Grant opts-out both players would hit free agency when the offseason arrives. Gallo has improved his stock and the opportunity to get a lucrative deal. The rumor was the reason the Heat backed off Gallo at the trade deadline had more to do with the term of the deal rather than the salary.

- Should the OKC Thunder chase after a disgruntled hometown hero?
- 3 OKC Thunder players who can step up in Aleksej Pokusevski’s absence

- Damian Lillard does not fit with the OKC Thunder
He’s stated repeatedly that money isn’t his top priority — winning is (and obviously term). Even with his love for this iteration of the Thunder he still might desire to join a team a little higher up the ladder, especially if the offer is solid. Even in that scenario, the belief is he’ll be open to doing a sign and trade with the Thunder.
Alternatively, the regression of Grant’s best asset (defense) combined with the pandemic could affect the deal he would get offered. The question is whether the Nuggets would remain as invested in retaining him with MPJ ascending.
Although the Thunder doesn’t have a player of MPJ’s ilk, the hope is Darius Bazley will develop, and other than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is likely the one untouchable on the team.
So here’s the ironic twist in the Grant situation. The sinking ship he described is now playing with a ball movement, player movement system with everyone getting touches. And, they remain committed defensively.
Let’s just say, we’ll revisit this in the offseason — but could Jerami Grant be the perfect replacement for Danilo Gallinari if he exits and mentor for Bazley as he develops?
Food for thought!
