OKC Thunder fall flat in Game 1 vs. Rockets: player grades
Best OKC Thunder Reserve:
In truth, it’s hard to give anyone a hat tip from the reserve group today based on how poorly the bench played. Although Dennis Schroder looked good in the final seeding game, today’s match he looked rusty, slow, and small particularly when guarding Harden.
The one reserve who gets the nod is rookie Darius Bazley who played just 17 minutes but came close to getting a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Moving forward, (see story later today) perhaps it’s time for Donovan to unleash Bazley and capitalize on his length. That he’s still connecting from distance and grabbing boards should give him the confidence to increase his playing time.
Best Opponent:
THIS is the type of game you bring to the hardcourt when you’re down a man — a superstar no less. James Harden led his squad never looking like the game was in question for the Rockets. Going back through the film it didn’t matter one iota who was guarding him.
You’ll find ample evidence with TFerg, Schroder, Roberson, Gallo, and others and not one had an effect at limiting or stopping him. In fact, his weight loss did nothing to alter his strength. Each of TFerg, Schroder, and CP3 was sent backward on moves by Harden when he simply overpowered them either via a chest bump or push off.
That’s one thing Harden probably doesn’t get credited with is his strength and was we tweeted it’s also why we need Lu Dort back because Harden can’t move Dort like he does everyone else.
Next up the OKC Thunder are back at in Game 2 on Thursday. Let’s hope they make enough tweaks to even the series. And, if Russell Westbrook remains out OKC has to take advantage and register the victory.
