OKC Thunder: 5 dark horse head coach candidates
Will Weaver – NBL – Sydney Kings
If Sam Presti ends up hiring Will Weaver perhaps he should start off the announcement with “it takes one to know one”. Presti served under RC Buford as an intern and did a variety of tasks in the San Antonio Spurs organization including film coordinator. Similarly, Weaver got a taste for basketball upper management while in school and in various film rooms of NBA clubs.
In his time with the 76ers and Nets, it was during the development phase of the franchises. Weaver became invaluable to Brett Brown and Kenny Atkinson in his role as a special assistant. While he was excellent in his role as developing talent he stood out for his ability to win when put in a position to lead.
Case in point — in his inaugural season at the helm of Nets G-League squad (the Long Island Nets) he took them to the finals. Ditto for his first season as head coach of the NBL, Sydney Kings.
It’s no wonder he’s a leading candidate to fill the OKC Thunder, head coaching job because he’s proven he can develop talent navigating a rebuild and also be competitive. For more on Weaver click here.
