Another wing projected to be selected in the top 10 is Patrick Williams. T.I. dives in with a view to whether he should be on the OKC Thunder radar.

Florida State wing Patrick Williams is among the many prospects who pundits can’t agree on. Williams lands in the top ten of mock drafts as frequently as he falls outside the lottery. Depending on whether he’s closer to the latter prediction he could be someone within the range of the OKC Thunder, or who wouldn’t require big moves to land. Let’s examine if he’s worth that type of effort and investment.

In the 2020 NBA Draft class, Patrick Williams joins a group of wings and/or big men who’ve rocketed into the top ten. Part of this is due to talent (see James Wiseman, Deni Avdija, Onyeka Okongwu, Obi Toppin for example) and in this narrators opinion, the other consideration is how few wings and big men there are in this class.

As with our other profiles, T.I. dives into the stats to gain perspective on Williams’ talent with a view to whether he should be a prospect the OKC Thunder should consider trading up to get.

Patrick Williams draft prospect preview:

Specifics:

  • Height: 6’8″
  • Weight: 225 pounds
  • Wingspan: 6’11”
  • Position: Forward
  • Birthdate/Age:  August 26, 2001, 19.2
  • College: Florida State, freshman
  • Stat line: 9.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and  1.0 blocks
  • Home Town: Charlotte, North Carolina

Although Williams stats don’t necessarily jump off the page like Onyeka Okongu’s stats as a forward he does fill up all the main categories including the defensive particulars.

Of note, Williams did not start any of the 29 games he played for Florida State this year and that should be taken into consideration when projecting his fit at the pro level. Granted, sometimes a player is put into a system in college and ascends to a higher mark once in the pros (see Duncan Robinson) but to expect every collegiate reserve to deliver in the pros is a reach.
