The OKC Thunder signed free agent guard Frank Jackson. Here are some of the reasons why they may have done this.

The OKC Thunder have added another player to their ever-growing roster when they signed free agent point guard Frank Jackson. As they have a number of point guards on their roster this could be seen as a head-scratching move.

The Thunder already have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, George Hill, Ty Jerome, and Theo Maldon as point guards on their roster. This means that Jackson is going into training camp knowing that he is fighting for a spot on the roster.

He spent two years as a backup with the New Orleans Pelicans  He averaged 7.2 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 16.4 minutes per game. He shot the ball at 42.2 percent from the floor, 31.9 percent from deep, and 74.3 percent from the line.

More from Thunderous Intentions

The first answer to this could be quite simple. Sam Presti has been making trade after trade. He has been very deliberate in the way that he has moved players, getting young talent, draft picks, or desired contracts in return.

However, it would appear that he may not be done. George Hill was incredible from deep last season, leading the NBA shooting 46.0 percent. He is a veteran point guard and teams know what they are getting with him. Presti could get some more value from another team by trading Hill.

The second option is that the OKC Thunder may be looking to see what Jackson can do with the ball in his hands. The Pelicans had Jrue Holiday and Lonzo Ball who were the dominant ball-handlers.

The third option is that Jackson has experience in the NBA. This commodity is in short supply on the Thunder’s young roster. One thing is for sure, the competition for spots on this roster just got greater. Whoever makes the final 17 will have earned their spot.
