OKC Thunder: ‘Resiliency’ dominates Sam Presti 5 media takeaways
Andre Roberson status:
With the roster swelled beyond what is allowable for training camp, Presti made the point there isn’t room to add anyone right now. That said, he is staying in touch with Andre Roberson‘s agent to keep track of the situation.
In a separate question regarding the franchise culture and identity, the GM elaborated on this factor. Royce Young noted the loss of Adams meant there wasn’t anyone with a long tenure still within the franchise. Presti skirted this topic in ‘Sam-speak’ stating the importance of culture and identity but also saying things need to grow and be fluid.
This answer was a bit surprising given how hard the franchise worked to establish their much coveted and admired culture.
With every Presti presser, there are moments where we need to read between the lines of what he’s saying to find the truth. In this case, the GM covered his bases by implying the young guys led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would evolve the culture. However, he left the door open with regard to Roberson.
Since there are numerous cuts to be made to get the roster to 20 for training camp and down to 15 for the season it’s understandable why he can’t suggest Dre is an option. However, if Presti can move George Hill and Trevor Ariza before the season start and also trim off the players who won’t factor from trades don’t be surprised if Dre ends up returning.
My gut instinct says Dre could end up being the Udonis Haslem of the Thunder. He represents the origins of the Thunder culture and work ethic, has overcome major hardship given his ongoing injury battles to return to the court and is a great person who is an effective leader and all-around nice guy.
