Though the OKC Thunder have played 65 games already this year, and still have six more left remaining on the docket, the 2020-21 campaign has always been viewed as just an event on the calendar that the franchise must get past before the real fun can begin.

Of course, what we’re referring to is the upcoming NBA Draft, where the franchise will find itself in possession of upwards of three first-round picks, including their own which could realistically find itself in the running for the top slot on the night.

Due to the fact that the front office’s hard work seems to be over, as they already have a franchise building block in place in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Sam Presti and co. have the luxury of going the route of choosing the “best player available” with their selection(s) during this year’s illustrious festivity.

Though there are still a few months to go between now and draft day, it’s certainly never too early to start planning ahead, especially for a playoff eliminated team like OKC.

Because of this, it’s more than likely that the Thunder are already creating a big board for themselves, jotting down specific players they could be interested in taking with one of their several picks.

Though we obviously have no idea which way Presti finds himself leaning, we at TI thought it would be fun to create a series discussing a few players at each position that we believe the team should have on their radar as we approach the big day.

To kick things off, we present to you 3 specific point guards the OKC Thunder should have listed high on their big board:

OKC Thunder draft target No. 1) Josh Giddey

As already stated, the OKC Thunder could see upwards of three first-round picks in this coming draft. Most likely, at least one of their acquired picks (odds are, just Miami’s) will find itself slotting in somewhere in the 15-20 range on the night.

With this, should they look to target a guard in this area of the draft, perhaps NBL standout, Josh Giddey, could be a solid option worth considering.

Currently thriving with the Adelaide 36ers, the 18-year-old is leading the entire league in assists with 7.5 a game to go along with 11.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.2 steals on 43 percent shooting from the floor.

A natural floor general, his distribution skills could certainly help SGA and, frankly, the rest of this Oklahoma City squad find easier times at getting cleaner looks at a basket, while his impressive 6-8 frame would continue Presti’s pursuit of adding on long and lengthy talents to the team’s roster.

An excellent decision-maker who can make high level reads and benefits from being able to see over a defense with his taller than average frame for a player at his position, taking a mid-round chance on Giddey may be an interesting move for the front office to consider, especially if they shy away from taking a one with their first pick.
