If Luka Doncic ever became available, OKC Thunder should pursue
By Mark Nilon
Yes, we understand that the OKC Thunder are playing the long game and, in turn, are trying to build organically via the NBA Draft to get themselves back into the conversation of being legitimate title contenders, but sometimes it’s worth speeding up the process if you can get your hands on a generational talent.
Let’s make this a bit more specific: if the recent rumblings are true about Luka Doncic being upset with Dallas’ front office, and that they actually fear their franchise superstar could search for greener pastures, the OKC Thunder should look to package together a truckload of their draft assets to try and bring him to the Sooner State.
As far as TI’s concerned, not even holding the fourth-best odds of landing the top spot in this year’s draft is safe from being traded when it comes to a guy like Doncic.
At just 22-years-old, the do-it-all point guard has twice found himself realistically in the running for MVP, including this year where he finished sixth in the illustrious race for his strong performance.
Through 66 games played, the 2x All-Star posted stellar averages of 27.7 points, 8.6 assists, and eight boards on 48 percent shooting from the floor and 35 percent shooting from deep.
We’ve discussed quite often how we think the Thunder should look into getting star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander a quality running mate, and have even listed a few young ballers that could fit the bill.
While we still believe some of these players previously mentioned could still be solid adds as partners for SGA, none would come close to having the impact that a guy like Doncic would.
Though listed as a point guard, the third-year pro boasts a 6-7 frame, thus fitting the stature and positionless-esque style of play that Sam Presti and co. love to roster.
Be it three, four, or five future firsts attached to players not named Shai, Oklahoma City should be willing to part with just about anything if it meant bringing on a talent like Luka Doncic should he ever become available.
Simply put, with their current situation of holding 34 total picks through 2027 and being in possession of an unbelievable amount of cap space, it would appear the Thunder could outbid almost anyone in the unlikely scenario (regardless of these recent reports) that the Mavericks list their franchise cornerstone on the block.
