OKC Thunder NBA draft profile: Chris Duarte – mature 3 & D specialist
Pro Comparison:
Analysts offered up a multitude of former and current NBA talents as comparisons such as a modern Rip Hamilton, Gary Trent Jr., Danny Green, John Starks, a better Andy Routins, and Klay Thompson light.
The fact Duarte generated so much input on who he could emulate should in itself be a positive sign. While I understand why clubs (especially rebuilding teams) put emphasis on age overall I think it gets too much shine.
Case in point, consider how many contending teams scour the buyout market after the trade deadline looking to plug holes and specific needs prior to the postseason. Then, ask yourself if developing a young prospect who’ll be versed in team schemes, can deliver 3-pointers, and deliver defense isn’t a more viable option.
OKC Thunder fit:
More from Thunderous Intentions
- Stealing one player from every Southwest Division team for the OKC Thunder
- Should the OKC Thunder chase after a disgruntled hometown hero?
- 3 OKC Thunder players who can step up in Aleksej Pokusevski’s absence
- Aleksej Pokusevski sidelined approximately 6 weeks with ankle injury
- Damian Lillard does not fit with the OKC Thunder
All that to say, at 24, Chris Duarte isn’t likely to be tapped by Sam Presti to join the OKC Thunder. Sure, Mark Daigneault could use his skills but will the Thunder want to invest one of their picks on him? Presti isn’t likely to get a chance to answer that question since Duarte is projected to be selected between 21st and 29th.
In closing, let’s just say this ageism needs to stop. And I’ll offer up one last ponderance to prove the point…
In 2017 another Oregon alum was selected 45th in the draft. At the time he was 22 and a half years old. Four years later his two-way play was arguably the most important for his playoff team as he averaged 25.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and shot 40 percent from deep. The player – – 6.7 shooting guard Dillon Brooks.
Let’s say the OKC Thunder return to the playoffs in three or four years — would having a 27 or 28-year-old who is well versed in your system and can provide lockdown defense be a valuable commodity?
Food for thought!
