All eyes will be focused on Miami as the moratorium begins. That’s because the belief is they are leading the Kyle Lowry sweepstakes. The Raptors will undoubtedly offer the most beloved player in franchise history the opportunity to re-sign but they also won’t stand in the way of him heading to another team if he so desires.
Initially, I wasn’t buying this Lowry to Heat hype but the news DeMar DeRozan may also have his eyes fixed on South Beach makes it more plausible. DeRozan and Lowry are best friends and Butler is close with both. For those who recall Butler being present in LA but not playing in the 2018 All-Star Game, some felt he was only on hand to offer support to friend DeMar whose father was ailing from cancer at the time. This triad also won a gold medal together at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Adrian Wojnarowski’s tweet that the Heat exercised the option on Dragic also clears the path for a sign and trade deal. ESPN detailed why this potential move could be the first domino that could impact at least two other teams (Raptors and either the Mavericks or Pelicans).
With the Heat expected to be major players in free agency that also means Pat Riley will be somewhat hampered in what he can offer select members of the 11 free agents, they must address.
Once again, I’d point to what Sean Marks did with Allen Crabbe and Tyler Johnson as an example of what Sam Presti could emulate with either the 25-year old Nunn or 27-year old 3-point sniper Robinson.
