Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins Western Conference Player of the Week
By Rylan Stiles
The OKC Thunder started the week (or ended the week, depending on how you view Sunday) with a big win over the New Orleans Pelicans, snapping NOLA’s four-game winning streak. This past week, their max contract point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander played at an All-Star level as voting for the mid-season festival opened on Christmas Day.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins Western Conference Player of the Week award for week 10 in the NBA season
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 27.5 points per game, dishing out seven assists per tilt and hauling down 6.3 rebounds per contest as he lifts the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 3-1 record in this game as well as notching his second career triple-double. He is joined by former-Thunder point guard (well, Kinda), Kemba Walker who logged a Christmas Day triple-double for the Knicks as New York turned in a 2-1 record, scoring 25-points per game, nine rebounds per game, and eight assists per matchup during the past week.
This is the first time Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won Western Conference Player of the week, his second nomination on the season. SGA represents the fifth player in Oklahoma City Thunder history to earn Western Conference Player of the Week honors.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joins elite company as Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Paul George all were tabbed players of the week for the Western Conference in a Thunder uniform as well as Dennis Schroder, who was the organizations most recent winner until SGA’s victory this week.
SGA now turns his sights to his first-ever NBA All-Star nod, so take to social media and NBA dot com to vote for the Oklahoma City Thunder star to head to Cleveland for the All-Star game.
The OKC Thunder have a loaded week ahead featuring a Tuesday/Wednesday back-to-back with the Kings and Suns before returning home on Friday for a battle with the New York Knicks and Sunday in the Paycom Center against the Dallas Mavericks. Can Shai Gilgeous-Alexander go back-to-back for this award?
Lu Dort has also been nominated for the Player of the Week award, and Josh Giddey has won the NBA Rookie of the Month award for the Western Conference during the first month of the NBA season. Hopefully, the awards keep coming for the OKC Thunder.
