The Oklahoma City Thunder fear that their second overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Chet Holmgren, has suffered a serious injury over the weekend at a Pro-Am event put on in Seattle. “The crawsOver” was put on by NBA veteran Jamal Crawford and over the weekend held a star-studded event featuring Holmgren, LeBron James, Paolo Banchero, Jayson Tatum, and other NBA stars. The game was called prematurely due to the moisture on the court, following Chet Holmgren’s injury.
On the play, Chet Holmgren got hurt, but it did not look too serious, With LeBron James going down the lane, Holmgren went up to contest, but came down awkwardly. Many speculated it was just a sprained ankle but today, the Athletic’s Shams Charania reported “Exams show Chet Holmgren has potentially torn ligaments in his foot, sources said. A timetable is being determined based on further evaluations.”

An Oklahoma City Thunder spokesperson added, “Chet is in the process of undergoing evaluation and when we have an update, we will communicate.” The Thunder will start training camp in mid-to-late September with their preseason opener taking place on the first week of October with the regular season to tip off on October 19th.
Charania clarified that the fear is the injury was suffered due to the unsafe court conditions at the pro-am event, which disways the national narrative about Holmgren’s frame being the issue.
While there is no timetable, even if Holmgren faces the worst-case scenario and is out for the season (which still is not likely at this point and time), we have seen other NBA stars miss their first season or struggle with injuries like Blake Griffin, Ben Simmons, and Joel Embiid just to name a few.
