Aleksej Pokusevski and Darius Bazley competing for minutes
The Pokusevski movement is in full effect and it’s quite the contrast compared to his previous two years. The Serbian has certainly shown some improvements, especially as it pertains to his decision-making and cutting down his turnovers. His preseason performances have got the fan base excited with some pundits calling him a connector. In four games against NBA talent, the 20-year-old averaged eight points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and one block on 46-21-75 shooting splits. His attention to detail has improved dramatically and he’s now making sound decisions with the rock.
Darius Bazley doesn’t have the hype of the fan base like Pokusevski but his play has been very good. In four preseason games, Bazley averaged nine points, six rebounds, and a block on 52 percent shooting and 65 percent from the line. The 23-year-old altered his playing style, taking fewer shots and isolations from the perimeter to playing more as a rolling big.
He didn’t take a single three in the final two preseason contests. Bazley still has some decision-making pains but when he plays in a straight line, his athleticism shines.
Pokusevski and Bazley are two players with contrasting strengths and weaknesses. The Serbian is a finesse player who plays at his own pace, utilizing his silky passing ability but isn’t athletic or physical. Bazley, on the other hand, is extremely athletic, capable of catching lobs, posterizing players, and weakside shot blocking but finds difficulty when placed in decision-making spots.
These two competing for minutes should be a fascinating battle.
