Prediction

The Grizzlies are on the fast track to becoming a perennial playoff seed and are invested in becoming a title contender. In contrast, the OKC Thunder are in the development and rebuilding stage.

The crazy part of this scenario is after the past five games it’s easy to see how close the Thunder are to becoming a team like the Grizzlies.

SGA is a superstar who is putting up performances in line with some of the MVP candidates and has easily vaulted to the top of the Most Improved Candidate board. Coincidentally, an award Ja Morant took home last season.

The recent offensive outburst showcases that perhaps the Thunder aren’t as far away from being a playoff contender as originally suspected.

Don’t forget Chet Holmgren is sitting on the bench and will help propel OKC another step up the ladder.

Yet the biggest question for Sam Presti and this iteration of the Thunder is when they bow out gracefully from the fight for Wembanyama (or Scoot Henderson) because there is a strong case to be made that adding one more top-notch draft pick and using some of the compiled draft stock to add some vets and young assets could find OKC in the same (or better) position as the Grizzlies as early as next season.

In the interim, Presti is going to need to find a way relatively soon to explain to SGA why he needs to shut him down which could end his chances of winning MIP or making an All-NBA team.

Leaving that discussion for another day, we’ll get a great litmus test for the Thunder tonight versus the Grizzlies albeit without a key cog in the mix (Bane) but a major core piece back in the mix (Jaren Jackson Jr. ).

The Grizzlies are beasts on the glass which very likely becomes the difference in determining the victor. Plus Triple J pulled down five blocks in his return so he’ll definitely have an impact on deterring the Thunder from their strength which is scoring in the paint.

All that said, the Grizzlies have not performed well when they’re missing Bane so this should be a closer battle than the oddsmakers are projecting.
I’m leaning toward the over (+229 points) and the Thunder keeping it closer than the spread so take OKC plus +6.5 points and the over.
