The Oklahoma City Thunder are just days away from the start of the 2023-24 NBA Season. With their season opener in the Windy City looming against Billy Donovan’s Bulls, the Thunder had one of their final practices before the show gets on the road. Afterward, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made an interesting comparison.
Back in 2021, the OKC Thunder made a surprising selection of Josh Giddey with the 6th overall pick. Since then, everyone has debated if Giddey could work alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as two ball-dominant players.
Last year’s success silenced the critics a tad, but there are still some skeptical of this duo working long-term, especially after Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s ascension into superstardom over the last year.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander makes an interesting Michael Jordan comparison when discussing a potential off-ball role for the star.
After practice on Sunday, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander spoke to the media for what is presumed to be the final time before the regular season tips off. In this media session, Gilgeous-Alexander was asked about playing more off-ball this season due to the amount of ball-handlers on this squad.
“If you saw the ‘Last Dance’ Documentary ther is a point in Michael Jordan’s career where he had to learn the triangle offense and playing [without] the ball in his hands 24/7” Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recalled. “If Michale Jordan had to do it, I certainly have to” the superstar explained.
Throughout his career, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has said all the right things. From his putting to rest the constant questions of if he wants to be in Bricktown, to him fully buying ito the Thunder’s offensive system and culture.
With this being the most anticipated season since 2017, it is certainly off to the right start following an impressive preseason and their superstar guard hitting all the right notes about what to expect from this Thunder offense.
