The Oklahoma City Thunder seem to have hit a home run at the trade deadline in their move for Jared McCain.
Although it cost them a rather hefty set of draft capital, including the Houston Rockets' 2026 first-round pick and a trio of second-round selections, that price is negligible considering what McCain has provided the team with already.
With Ajay Mitchell out for a over a month rehabbing an abdominal strain, McCain took on a major role in the rotation. He flashed his catch-and-shoot and off-ball movement skill-set on a nightly basis, becoming the burst of energy Oklahoma City needed off the bench.
With Mitchell slated to return against the Denver Nuggets on Monday, it remains to be seen how McCain's role will be shaped moving forward. But McCain has earned his way into some important minutes for the Thunder down the stretch.
In doing so, he's given himself an opportunity in Oklahoma City that the Philadelphia 76ers never could.
Jared McCain will play a major part on a championship-contending team down the stretch of the season
The end of McCain's time in Philadelphia was disappointing for both the player and the organization. After bursting onto the scene early last season as a dynamic scoring threat, McCain suffered a torn meniscus that kept him out for the remainder of his rookie campaign.
With Quentin Grimes emerging as an important rotational piece and the addition of V.J. Edgecombe, there simply wasn't a runway for McCain when he returned this season. If McCain had stayed in Philadelphia, it's unclear if he would've truly been granted an opportunity to develop his skill-set.
So far, he's been allowed to blossom in Oklahoma City. Through 13 games with his new team, he's averaging 11.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.9 assists while knocking down 41.9% of his attempts from beyond the arc. He's received a diet of 19 minutes per night during that span.
Even on a deep Thunder team, McCain has done enough to earn a shot at cracking the shortened playoff rotation. He could soon be playing a major role for a championship favorite.
It seems strange to say given the talent they have at the top of their roster, but who knows when Philadelphia could have provided this opportunity to McCain? Joel Embiid's injury issues and Paul George's inconsistencies severely limit their ceiling. Even now they are rapidly plunging into play-in territory, having lost four of their last five games and now possessing the eight seed in the East.
In short, McCain has earned an unbelievable opportunity in Oklahoma City. It's now time for him to seize it.
