With the NBA regular season about a month away, the OKC Thunder anxiously await the last domino of free agency to fall. Though Oklahoma City has no interest in bringing in star center Jalen Duren, his future destination could potentially hurt its chances of winning another championship in the near future.
Duren has established himself as a formidable presence underneath the rim, and he helped the Detroit Pistons secure the Eastern Conference's top seed last season. Yet, even with this, the unrestricted free agent has had difficulty reaching a contract agreement with Detroit, thus drawing trade interest from inquiring teams around the league.
While an agreement between the two parties is still the most likely scenario, the Thunder camp can’t help but root for an unlikely, yet still real possibility.
One Jalen Duren destination is clearly better than the rest for Thunder
Several Western Conference teams have shown interest in the big man. According to ESPN, the Sacramento Kings have been a steady background character in the Duren sweepstakes.
Among the other interested teams are the Lakers (who have since acquired center Walker Kessler), Rockets, Clippers, and Celtics.
Boston's interest has been slightly ambiguous, as rumors have swirled that Duren's desire to join the Celtics was simply to build leverage against Detroit. However, all other destinations are very much still on the table.
Sacramento, of all teams, would be the perfect destination -- not for the Kings themselves, but for a Thunder team that has title aspirations.
If Duren were to join any of the other suitors, including a return to the Pistons, it would only bolster the roster of one of their most fearsome competitors.
Thunder would love for Jalen Duren to waste away in Sacramento
As it stands, Bleacher Report has the Kings' season win total set at a dismal 20.5, good for the lowest projection in the league. Even though Duren would make them significantly better, it would do little to assert them as legitimate postseason threats.
At this stage in his career, Duren is a game-changing player. He proved as much in Detroit last season, when he averaged a double-double for the third year in a row. However, his hypothetical arrival wouldn't change the course of Sacramento's current trajectory all that much.
The Thunder are looking forward to a healthier year in 2026-27, and barring any more offseason shakeups or other uncontrolled variables, they should enjoy a straight shot to a third straight Western Conference Finals.
Jalen Duren is the last free agent domino to fall, and hopefully, it doesn't land too heavily on the blue and orange's title aspirations.
