Wednesday night, all the worst fears about Otega Oweh's recent leg injury officially became a reality, as the OKC Thunder announced that the wing sustained a torn Achilles tendon during their recent preseason bout against the Pacers and will miss the entire 2026-27 NBA season as a result.
Needless to say, this is absolutely devastating news for a player who was just starting to strengthen his case to serve as the 15 member of the Thunder's roster after being signed to a two-way deal soon after being selected 41 overall in June's draft.
Now, those dreams of him making the final cut seem all but dashed.
In times like these, it's certainly easy to focus on the negatives. However, even a grueling situation such as this still seems to have one obvious bright side -- Otega Oweh is surrounded by plenty of Thunder players who understand what he's going through.
Thunder roster a ton of players who can guide Otega Oweh forward
Over the last several years, the Thunder have unfortunately become synonymous with players missing their entire rookie season due to injury.
From stars like Chet Holmgren, who missed his debut campaign back in 2022-23 due to a Lisfranc injury in his foot, and former lottery picks such as Nikola Topic, who was shelved for the better part of his first two years with the team due to a torn ACL and testicular cancer, respectively, to last year's first-round selection Thomas Sorber, who tore his ACL last offseason, there are a number of noteworthy names under contract with OKC who can share in the Kentucky product's pain.
As Sorber alluded to just a few weeks ago, his teammates proved to be incredibly supportive and uplifting throughout his recovery process thanks to their built-in knowledge of what it takes to get back to the hardwood.
The biggest takeaways the Georgetown product had from his teammates' invaluable advice were: "Always be patient" and "Listen to what the medical staff has for you."
Clearly, this kind of guidance should be number one on Oweh's "what to-follow" list, as an Achilles tear, though not the career-ending injury it once was, still requires a long and arduous recovery process that generally takes between six and twelve months for a full recovery.
Still only 23 years old, even with a lost season, the wing has plenty of time to carve out a long pro career for himself. Though it may be hard for him to see this right now, hopefully his injury experienced Thunder teammates can help him keep his eyes on such a reality.
