All summer long, Cason Wallace has been linked to two burning questions: When will he and the OKC Thunder agree on a new contract extension, and for how much?
With the October 19 deadline for rookie-scale extensions roughly a full week away, it's anyone's guess when such a signing might happen. However, what he could command in salary is becoming clearer with each passing day, especially with Brandin Podziemski's new payday.
Saturday, it was announced that Podziemski and the Golden State Warriors had agreed to terms on a five-year, $110 million fully guaranteed rookie-scale contract extension that will keep the guard in San Francisco through the 2031-32 campaign.
Throughout his three full seasons in the association, Podziemski has established himself as a quality role player with the Dubs. 2025-26 proved to be his most productive season with the club, as he posted 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals on 45.5 percent shooting from the floor and 37.1 percent shooting from deep.
Yet, despite these numbers and the fact that he's become a regular in the Warriors' starting backcourt rotation alongside the great Stephen Curry, it seems to be universally accepted from those residing in and out of the Sooner State that Cason Wallace is the superior, more accomplished talent with higher upside between the two.
All things considered, from his All-Defense-earning abilities to his two-way contributions that have already helped lead the Thunder to an NBA Championship, it seems safe to say that $110 million over a five-year span is now the absolute floor for the 22-year-old.
Cason Wallace looking for north of $25 million annually from Thunder
According to Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line, initial extension talks between Wallace and the Thunder have been hovering around $25 million per year.
For the rising star combo guard, this is apparently a tad shy of his desired range.
Sources are suggesting Wallace is eyeing something closer to the $31.5 million AAV Jazz stud Keyonte George inked with Utah just a few weeks ago.
Such rumblings should not come as a shock at this point, as Wallace has made his feelings on such a payout well known for some time now.
Of course, though he may be pushing for more than this reported starting point, given the financial restraints this Thunder front office faces, it'll take some masterful behind-the-scenes shakeups from Sam Presti to afford meeting such a price tag.
With the extension deadline rapidly approaching, this ongoing saga between Wallace and the Thunder is one worth keeping a close eye on.
