The OKC Thunder are already considered to be the best team the league currently has to offer when fully healthy. Just imagine what they’d be viewed as if they added arguably the greatest player who ever lived, LeBron James, to their roster.
While that may sound like a pipe-dream hypothetical, Oklahoma City now has as good a chance as ever to make this a reality following the recent Lu Dort trade.
By moving the veteran to Atlanta, Sam Presti not only opened up a vacant spot on OKC’s roster but also provided them with financial flexibility by pushing them under the second apron.
LeBron is currently a free agent and, by all accounts, is eager to contend for another title. On top of this, he’s also reportedly willing to sign a minimum deal with a team should he see them as a legitimate threat to take home the 2027 Larry O’Brien Trophy.
All things considered, the Thunder are perhaps the most logical team for him to join next season should winning his fifth ring be his sole objective.
Thunder are now a theoretically realistic LeBron James destination
Last season, OKC finished with the best record in the association at 64-18 and came up one win shy of advancing to their second straight NBA Finals, despite widespread injury woes popping up throughout the campaign.
As things currently stand, the Thunder find themselves prepping for 2026-27 as the favorites, along with the reigning conference champion Spurs, to win the title.
Bringing LeBron into the mix would only help improve their already elite odds.
While he may be far from his prime self, James has proven over the last several seasons that he's still, without question, one of the best players in the game today.
Despite being north of 40 years old, the future first-ballot Hall of Famer is coming off a season where he posted stellar averages of 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals on 51.5 percent shooting from the floor while guiding the hobbled Lakers to a 53-29 record and their first semi-final appearance since 2023.
Adding this kind of production is bound to make any team better.
Of course, on a squad already rostering the two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, two other already established All-NBA talents in Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, and a slew of title-tested key rotation pieces headlined by Isaiah Hartenstein, Cason Wallace, and Ajay Mitchell, his arrival would likely send the rest of the league into a state of pure chaos.
