It's already strange enough seeing Aaron Wiggins repping colors that aren't OKC Thunder blue and orange.

Now, it's reached even greater levels of bizarre after the Hawks' latest X post featuring an all-too-familiar phrase among Thunder faithful.

Atlanta pushed out an image of their new wing donning their statement edition jersey, accompanied by the caption "The man that saved basketball."

As OKC fans are well aware, this phrase was coined and consistently echoed in Wiggins' direction from his arrival to the Thunder back in 2021 up until the bitter end of his tenure this past July.

The origins of this joyous saying date back to the moment he was selected 55 overall in the second round, when a high school student at the time, Cody Burton, created a meme featuring Wiggins in his Maryland Terrapins jersey captioned with the celebratory statement.

Now, this hilarious reputation of his finds itself continuing on down in Atlanta.

Thunder departures set Ajay Mitchell up for potential breakout campaign

Though seeing the Thunder move on from a number of beloved players like Wiggins, Isaiah Joe, and Lu Dort was certainly painful, on the bright side, the team appears to have the weapons needed to make up for their departures.

In fact, one player, in particular, is now viewed as a serious breakout candidate for the coming campaign as a result.

Throughout his two seasons with the club, Ajay Mitchell has worked his way up from a mere second-round selection in 2024 to a core rotation player in 2025.

Just last season, he went on to post an impressive 13.6 points, 3.6 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game on 48.5 percent shooting from the field while predominantly coming off the pine, and finished fifth in the running for Sixth Man of the Year.

For the record, this kind of production was seen while sharing playing time and touches with all three of Wiggins, Joe, and Dort in tow.

Now, heading into 2026-27, Mitchell is only bound to see his play reach even greater heights, for he's widely believed to be the main beneficiary of these newly vacated touches and offensive opportunities.

Already, we've seen how tremendously he can perform when given a bigger role with the Thunder, as he averaged 14.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists on 41.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc as a starter in the regular season last year and bumped these numbers up to 18.4 points, 4.7 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.0 steals through seven starts in the high-pressure playoffs.

Of course, these were technically only spurts along the way. It's time to show what he can do when entrusted with a larger role on a far more consistent basis.
