It took 2 Thunder losses for ludicrous Jalen Williams trade idea to be proposed

When the OKC Thunder were riding high on their two-straight sweeps and an epic eight-game playoff win streak, everyone was convinced they were coasting their way toward a second consecutive NBA Championship here in 2026.

Now, following their lone two losses of the postseason coming against the Spurs, the folks at ESPN are teetering on doomsday talking points, as they find themselves pushing for a major shakeup to Oklahoma City's talent pool by proposing an offseason blockbuster that would ship Jalen Williams outbound.

While admitting that "blowing up its phenomenal young core" is the "last thing" the Thunder should be thinking about right now, the idea of trading J-Dub to the Brooklyn Nets was broached as a way to both try and address their long-term, second-apron pushing payroll while continuing their long-standing efforts to stockpile future draft picks.

The proposed exchange they believe could accomplish such goals reads as follows:

Thunder get: Michael Porter Jr., 2027 first-round pick (least favorable of their own and Houston's), 2029 first-round pick, 2031 first-round pick

Nets get: Jalen Williams

ESPN views Ajay Mitchell as Jalen Williams' replacement on Thunder

Considering the high-end level of success the Thunder have had when thrusting sophomore Ajay Mitchell into the starting lineup while Williams has been injured (19-1 in such instances between both regular season and playoff action), this proposal seems to be suggesting that OKC's best course of action for the long-term could be to make the replacement permanent.

The idea is that not only would they still have an incredibly talented secondary playmaker running alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the first five rotation, but that it would also "rebalance" Oklahoma City's books moving forward, as Williams is owed $229 million through 2030-31 while Mitchell is attached to the best bargain deal in the league at $8.7 million in total through 2028.

Now, while it's fair to assume that the Thunder could remain highly competitive and even still win titles if they were to pursue such a trade, the fact of the matter is, Mitchell should not be seen as the successor to J-Dub in the club's core rotation -- he should be viewed as a part of it alongside him.

The whole reason why OKC is so feared is that they're both incredibly young and deep.

Getting rid of a 25-year-old established All-Star, All-NBA, and All-Defensive talent who, just a season ago, played a major role in bringing home the franchise's first-ever championship, may be something the Thunder could survive, especially with Ajay in tow, but it is incredibly unnecessary to do, let alone think about with only two more wins seperating them from a second straight trip to the Finals.

And as for the case that this move would shed serious salary from their record-breaking payroll (Porter would be flipped for more draft capital in this proposal), it's worth noting that Sam Presti and company have so many first-round picks coming their way, with two even falling into the top 17 in this year's draft, they already have the assets needed to remain below the second apron moving forward.

At best, this proposed trade idea should be viewed as entertaining to think about, but ultimately unnecessary.

At worst, and perhaps the most popular reaction at this point in time, it's absolutely ludicrous.
