The OKC Thunder shocked the NBA world last season when they pulled off a last second deal to acquire Jared McCain from Philadelphia ahead of the February 5 trade deadline.
Just as no one expected such a transaction to be executed, McCain had no idea what his future would hold out in the Sooner State.
Given how established the Thunder already were with their recent NBA Championship and insanely deep rotation headlined by three All-Star players in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren, he has now publicly admitted during a recent episode of The Old Man and the Three that he didn't even expect to receive playing time with the club.
Fast forward eight months, and not only has he already established himself as a regular in Oklahoma City's rotation, but following a slew of summer shakeups, he's now widely regarded as one of the most important role players on this dynasty-pushing team heading into 2026-27.
Jared McCain exceeding his own expectations as member of the Thunder
Despite his lack of expectations coming in, it didn't take long for McCain to come across serious action as a member of the Thunder.
From his third game on with OKC, the combo guard saw himself hovering around 20 minutes per night and was posting solid averages of 10.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists while shooting 39.1 percent from deep.
Behind his efficient shooting stroke, impressive off-ball movement, and top-flight hustle on the hardwood, McCain earned the trust of head coach Mark Daigneault to log substantial minutes amid widespread injury woes during their playoff run, especially during their high-pressure Western Conference Finals series against San Antonio.
Even though he was still less than four months into his tenure with the Thunder and was forced to learn their scheme and build chemistry on the fly, the 22-year-old still managed to shine against the Spurs, as he ranked third on the team in plus-minus while averaging 13.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists along the way.
Clearly, he did enough to make the front office feel comfortable offloading many of his backcourt competitors from the rotation this summer, such as Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe, and is now viewed as one of the three primary replacements for the aforementioned departed ballers in the core lineup.
Considering he came into OKC not even expecting to play on such a stacked team, him being looked to as such a valuable piece of their title-pushing game plan is truly a testimony to how great of an acquisition McCain has proven to be.
