The OKC Thunder are likely keeping close tabs on the status of LeBron James. It's not out of interest in signing the NBA legend, but out of fear of where he might wind up next.
With the latest report that LeBron would go as far as taking a minimum contract, it positions OKC's biggest title threats as legitimate contenders to land the future Hall of Famer.
One destination, in particular, has more than enough cap space to bring him on, and it would mean the sure demise of the Thunder's 2026-27 title hopes.
After re-signing Julian Champagnie, the San Antonio Spurs still aren't even sniffing the second apron. Therefore, signing James to any kind of minimum salary would be inconsequential, not to mention that it would be exactly what their roster needs.
The former Laker would serve as another ball handler that San Antonio lacked on their run to the Finals. It was exposed during games when De'Aaron Fox sat out with an injury, and it ultimately contributed to their downfall in the championship round against the New York Knicks.
LeBron would represent a massive swing in Thunder-Spurs rivalry
With James, the Spurs would gain something they didn't have in their previous playoff run: experience. Before 2026, De'Aaron Fox was the only member of the Spurs' starting five who had postseason experience. They certainly changed that this past year, though, and LeBron would only add to their newfound playoff knowledge.
At age 41, James is still one of the upper-echelon players in the league. He may lack the same burst he had a few years back, but his nose for the rim and unmitigated basketball IQ are among the top in the league.
The Spurs handled Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals last season, but James boasts recent Thunder dominance in his own right. Despite his Lakers getting swept in the series prior, he averaged 23.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists, all while shooting an even 50.0 percent from the floor.
In short, James still has it.
Like it or not, Thunder would be outmatched by James-led Spurs
It's true that the Thunder sorely missed Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell in their series loss to the Spurs. Even with those two, though, they would be hard-pressed to match up against the same Spurs team... plus LeBron James.
Adding a top-two player of all time would surely tip the scales. Simply put, San Antonio would have virtually no weaknesses.
They would possess two of the best veteran ball handlers in the league with lethal shooters all around them, not to mention defending Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama manning the interior. Needless to say, coach Mark Daigneault would have a near-impossible task on his hands trying to come up with a plan of attack.
Though the Spurs haven't yet been rumored in the James sweepstakes, it wouldn't be far-fetched given the forward's willingness to sacrifice a paycheck for another chance at a ring. Thunder fans can only hope that the legend's decision doesn't cause a seismic shift in the Western Conference playoff picture.
