Unlike many other teams with an open roster spot, the OKC Thunder have the luxury of not needing to play it safe when sifting through potential options due to one major reason: they already have unbelievable depth at their disposal.
Outside of their Big Three of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren, and even after trading key guys from last year's rotation like Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins, Oklahoma City has an obscene amount of talent on this roster, many of whom could feasibly start on other top-tier contenders around the league.
From headliners like Ajay Mitchell, Jared McCain, and Alex Caruso to rising frontcourt favorites like Jaylin Williams, the club's collection of trusty rotation pieces is truly unmatched.
Because of this, one could argue the Thunder may want to avoid erring on the side of caution when deciding who should take over the final spot on their roster, as they have plenty of players who can hold things down as is.
Instead of chasing an experienced veteran in the twilight years of their career or a limited, one-trick pony role player (Bismack Biyombo, Tony Bradley, etc.), they may want to swing for the fences on a low-risk, high-reward talent whom they could potentially get on an absolute steal of a deal.
Considering their current financial constraints, this course of action should sound quite enticing, and there's a particular player available on the open market who fits this profile to a T.
Thunder in a perfect position to take a swing on Ochai Agbaji
With their recent decision to float an offer sheet to Spencer Jones, it suggests Sam Presti and company may be interested in bolstering their small forward depth, which, frankly, would be a smart idea considering star Jalen Williams' recent health woes.
Though the Denver Nuggets ultimately decided to match said offer, there's a player at the same position still available on the free agent market who not only sports a similar style of play as Jones, but has the potential to reach even greater heights in his career if all goes right.
Ochai Agbaji is just four seasons removed from being selected 14 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, and, despite constant migration from team to team, has shown flashes of being a quality 3&D talent out on the wings.
His best season came while with the Raptors back in 2024-25, when he posted solid averages of 10.4 points and 3.8 rebounds on 49.8 percent shooting from the floor and 39.9 percent shooting from deep while ranking in the 94 percentile in perimeter isolation defense and the 74 percentile in rim deterrence.
After being packaged in a salary-shedding trade for Toronto and spending half a season with the hapless Nets, Agbaji finds himself looking for a place to call home ahead of 2026-27.
A team like the Thunder, which has a stand-out track record of properly developing young prospects (Ajay Mitchell, Aaron Wiggins, Branden Carlson, etc.), could be the ideal club to provide him with the promise of a fresh new start.
Frankly, considering their need for natural threes and the fact that he's still just 26 and a recent lottery pick, the interest in a union should be felt both ways.
