ESPN's senior NBA insider Shams Charania decided to take matters into his own hands by revealing several key NBA Schedule details well before the league's planned Tuesday afternoon dissemination. To the surprise of no one, the OKC Thunder are heavily involved in this premature reveal, as they are set for primetime matchups both on opening night and Christmas Day.
While Oklahoma City fans are presumably just excited that their beloved ball club will be gracing their screens for two of the most exciting days the league has to offer, their X-Mas matchup could leave some a bit underwhelmed, especially when considering the other possible faceoffs that could have been arranged instead.
Timberwolves far from most exciting Christmas matchup for Thunder
The Timberwolves are certainly a quality opponent for any team, and hold recent history with the Thunder, what with their 2025 Western Conference Finals bout, but they are far from the most entertaining foe for OKC to see on the biggest night of the year.
Christmas Day games should be a true spectacle for viewers to tune into.
With this, having the Thunder duke it out with squads that have given them an actual run for their money in the past, such as the Denver Nuggets or San Antonio Spurs, or finding the two most recent NBA Champions in them and the New York Knicks go head-to-head would have almost certainly been the more action-packed approach to setting off fireworks for the Holiday showdown.
Instead, it's Minnesota, a team who, though intriguing what with their new star-studded backcourt of Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball leading the charge, failed to give OKC more than one real freight during their last five-game postseason meeting.
Not only this, but the Timberwolves will be hosting this outing, which, in many ways, could be taken as being seriously disrespectful to the Thunder -- what on earth have the T-Wolves accomplished to earn them the right to make this a home game?!
Among the five total Christmas Day games, this one that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and company are set to take part in is easily the least rousing.
Thunder starting season off right with face-off against newest rival
Though Christmas may be a bit of a let-down, at least opening night seems to have the makings of it being must-see TV.
The Thunder are slated to square off against the Spurs to kick off the 2026-27 season, making it their 13 head-to-head over the course of one full Calendar year.
San Antonio holds a commanding record against Oklahoma City over this span, going 8-4, including a 4-3 series win in last year's conference finals.
Still with the taste of dissapointment in their mouths following their 2026 postseason ouster, expect game one to start out with unmatched intensity exuding from the Thunder.
