Throughout his tenure with the OKC Thunder, Nikola Topic has regularly made headlines for unfortunate, health-related reasons.
From entering the association with a torn ACL and subsequently sitting out the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign as a result, to being diagnosed with and undergoing successful treatment for testicular cancer this past season, the point guard has found himself making far more waves with his off-the-floor misfortunes than on-court contributions.
Sadly, this trend seems to be continuing right on into the 2026 offseason, as the Thunder announced Saturday that Topic underwent minimally invasive surgery on his spine called a lumbar microdiscectomy, an operation typically associated with removing herniated discs.
The good news is that Oklahoma City has reported that he's expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
However, this report that Topic has once again required meaningful medical intervention less than three years into his career is far from a joyous surprise.

Since being selected 12 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, Topic has served more as an exciting mystery prospect than a consistent contributor within the rotation.
Through two full seasons in the association, the Serbian guard has appeared in a total of just 10 regular-season games with the Thunder, logging averages of 5.2 points, 4.4 assists, and 1.9 rebounds while shooting 40.0 percent from beyond the arc.
While he's certainly produced admirably when given the opportunity, the reality is said opportunities have clearly come too few and far between for the Thunder and their fanbase to have a real sense of what they actually have with Topic.
Coming into the league, the 6-foot-6 natural floor general was a highly coveted talent who, had it not been for his knee injury, was viewed by some as being a legitimate contender to be snatched up with the number one pick, or at the very least a top 10 pick, in his class.
Of course, the ACL tear resulted in him dropping to the back end of the lottery, where he fell directly into the Thunder's lap, while his persistent health ailments since then have held him back from establishing himself and carving out a role within coach Mark Daigneault's rotation.
Now, after yet another season filled with extraordinary circumstances being met with triumphant perseverance, Topic finds himself entering the offseason once again facing an uphill battle on the road toward proving himself as a mainstay contributor for OKC and, frankly, the NBA as a whole.
