Otega Oweh has been seen as a highly intriguing talent among OKC Thunder personnel and fans alike ever since he was snatched up 41 overall in this past June's NBA Draft.

Nearly four months later, it's apparent he's only continued to warrant and strengthen the appeal he has as a prospect, as coach Mark Daigneault was seen gushing over the rookie at Saturday's practice, saying he has "all the physical tools" and branded him as someone who possesses "great physical athleticism, strength, [and] size."

With these words of praise, Oweh's confidence deserves to be on the rise, for clearly he's only continued to flash his on-court potential throughout training camp. Come Monday, this standing of his with Oklahoma City's headman could help guide the wing to a true breakout performance.

At the same practice, Daigneault revealed that not only will the Thunder's entire main rotation be inactive for their upcoming bout against the Hawks, but they also won't even be traveling with the team to Atlanta.

Needless to say, this game is shaping up to be all about the youngsters.

So far this preseason, Oweh has logged a total of 44 minutes played, 35 of which have come in the second half of play.

Without the usual suspects of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, Ajay Mitchell, and Cason Wallace in the fold, expect the second-rounder to step into action early and often.

With Daigneault's latest praise, one should anticipate a high level of usage to be experimented with for him on both ends of the court.

Hopefully he can find a way to capitalize on this suspected opportunity.

Otega Oweh has potential to be a two-way contributor for Thunder

As most people are aware at this point, Oweh's main draw as a prospect is his defensive intangibles.

With his lateral quickness, 6-foot-8 wingspan, and disruptive presence in the passing lanes and on-ball, the Kentucky product has proven himself capable of guarding three of the five positions at a high-end level and, according to coach Daigneault, projects as "a prototype wing defender."

However, during his collegiate career, Oweh also showcased some rather underrated skills on the offensive end as well.

In his final season with the Wildcats, the 23-year-old brought his scoring averages up to an impressive 18.6 points per game on 46.5 percent shooting from the floor.

Now, though his long-range success rate was far from desirable, as he cashed in on just 34.7 percent of his attempts throughout his four seasons in the NCAA, he managed to bring this clip up to 38.3 percent in catch-and-shoot situations during his senior season.

What bodes well for this trend is the fact that the Thunder are heavily reliant on a player's ability to contribute off the catch, as they ranked within the top 10 in catch-and-shoot attempts from beyond the arc just last season and placed second in this category during the 2025 playoffs.

If he can find a way to tap back into this kind of production here in the preseason, that could go a long way in his efforts to claim OKC's final standard roster spot for the 2026-27 campaign.
