Throughout his 19-year tenure with the OKC Thunder, Sam Presti has confidently cemented himself as one of the greatest executives in all of sports.
From his tremendous asset-acquisition skills to his stellar overall roster-building abilities, at this point, the beloved GM has truly entered a stratosphere of his own in the NBA.
In fact, his expertise is so widely revered that, now seven seasons after striking on one of the most lopsided exchanges in recent history, the 2019 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander blockbuster with the LA Clippers, top execs in the NFL find themselves reaching out to Presti for advice regarding their own decisions.
Recently, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated revealed that Browns GM Andrew Berry consulted with Presti about his blockbuster Myles Garrett trade, with the senior writer revealing the Thunder architect "affirmed" the move by Cleveland to not only secure three future high-end picks, but also bring aboard rising star pass rusher, Jared Verse, as well.
"Most folks on the outside focused on the four first-round picks and two additional first-round pick swaps Presti landed in the [Paul George-for-Shai Gilgeous-Alexander trade]. But the reality was that OKC viewed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a player they were higher on than most, as the key," Breer wrote.
Browns' Andrew Berry sought out Thunder GM with Myles Garrett deal
Though it's hard to argue that there's a seamless comparison between the two blockbuster exchanges, it's fair to say there are some entertaining parallels present.
As with how George was viewed when OKC swapped him out for a package including SGA, the Browns opted to part ways with Garrett, a much more experienced and accomplished star player, for a promising, albeit still incredibly young, talent in Verse.
On top of this, similar to the Shai deal, the lion's share of attention regarding Cleveland's return package from the LA Rams has focused on the stellar draft capital they netted (a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick).
However, like Breer noted when it came to how the Thunder were higher than most on Gilgeous-Alexander, perhaps the same could and, quite frankly, should be said about Verse.
After all, just two seasons after being selected 19 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, the defensive end has already totaled 12 sacks and 124 total tackles, while earning numerous, high-end accolades such as two Pro Bowl nods and a Defensive Rookie of the Year award for his top-shelf production.
Again, while it's certainly tough to compare the exact circumstances from these two completely different sports, of all the members of the so-called "think tank/buddy group of executives across sports" that Breer mentioned in his piece, Sam Presti is certainly someone who can relate to what the Browns' executive is currently going through.
