OKC Thunder players seem to be dropping like flies here in the early stages of the 2026-27 NBA season.
First, Cason Wallace and Jalen Williams suffered potentially season-ending injuries in just the third game of the season. Then it was Chet Holmgren, who's set to miss his second straight game with patellar tendinitis.
The most recent player to receive a chomp from the injury bug is Alex Caruso, who sprained his ankle during Monday's bout against Phoenix and now has some believing he could be out for an extended period as a result.
In just a matter of 24 hours, the Thunder managed to lose four of their best defensive talents, leaving their firepower on the less glamorous side of the ball significantly depleted.
Fortunately, less than a week earlier, Sam Presti snatched up an under-the-radar young prospect in Micah Peavy, who could now receive plenty of run as a defensive contributor as a result of this recent string of injuries.
Thunder should see what they have in Micah Peavy amid injury woes
No one should expect Peavy to miraculously turn into the franchise's next hidden gem star akin to the likes of Ajay Mitchell.
However, his on-court attributes, defensive-first approach, and physical build are all things this Presti-led Thunder organization has historically adored in a young prospect.
The 40 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Peavy projects to be the same caliber player as Oklahoma City's recent second-round selection and promising training camp prospect prior to his Achilles tear, Otega Oweh, only with NBA experience already on his resume.
During his rookie season with the New Orleans Pelicans, the Georgetown product managed to finish fourth on the team in defensive rating and third in steals percentage (minimum 50 games played) in his 61 games played, all while, as he recently put it to OKC's own Nick Gallo, being "tasked to guard the best players on the other team."
Now attached to a two-way deal on a defensive-minded Thunder squad down four of their primary defenders, it may only be a matter of time before coach Mark Daigneault looks to see what the sophomore can provide this team on the defensive side of the ball as they try to navigate without their core talents.
Wildly undermanned, perhaps they'll look to test Peavy out on Wednesday night as they travel to Dallas to take on the also hobbled Mavericks.
