Among the bevy of young, promising talents the OKC Thunder are hoarding on their roster, Thomas Sorber is undoubtedly the biggest mystery of them all.

Throughout his two seasons in the association, Sorber has yet to log a single minute in the NBA Summer League, preseason, or regular season combined.

Now, as we head into Monday's matchup against the Atlanta Hawks, this dormancy streak is set to continue, as he's officially been ruled out as he continues to recover from a knee operation he underwent earlier this offseason.

The former Georgetown product came into the 2025 NBA Draft pegged as one of the best big man prospects in his class, especially when it came to the defensive side of the ball. When snatched up just outside of the lottery at 15 overall, many believed the Thunder had landed a perfect new contributor to add to their championship-tested rotation.

Fast forward to the early stages of his sophomore campaign, and Sorber still finds himself on the outside looking in.

Thomas Sorber still a complete unkown to Thunder

Amid his absence from playing, the Thunder have gone about and added a 7-foot-3 behemoth in Aday Mara to their arsenal, who not only boasts higher pedigree from a draft stock standpoint, but has also been absolutely crushing it so far in his first preseason go-around with the club.

With all of this in mind, not only was he already facing an uphill battle toward receiving minutes with the likes of Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein, and Jaylin Williams all ahead of him in the big man pecking order, but he now has the rookie Mara seamlessly separating himself as well.

This kind of competition, coupled with minimal action heading into his first regular season with the Thunder, certainly doesn't bode well for Sorber, a once promising and still wildly unknown commodity.

Thomas Sorber warned us about taking it slow with Thunder

While this slow trajectory for the youngster may be testing everyone's patience, Sorber warned us all at media day that this was likely to be the case.

While speaking about advice that he received from teammates like Chet Holmgren and Nikola Topic, two players who also spent their first year in the association sidelined due to injury, the big man highlighted patience and trusting OKC's medical staff as the two key takeaways from his discussions.

Sorber came into the league hobbled by turf toe, tore his right ACL during 2025 training camp, and underwent a cleanup procedure on this same knee this past July.

It goes without saying that he has quite an extensive injury rap sheet, especially for someone who has yet to play a single game at the pro level.

With this in mind, while it may be hard for Thunder fans to accept, taking his time and trusting the process is the best thing he can do for himself at this point in time.
