It seems that every chance Victor Wembanyama gets to take a shot at the OKC Thunder or one of their players, he takes it.
Whether it's throwing subtle shade at Oklahoma City's style of play by hinting back in December that it's neither "pure" nor "ethical," or belittling Chet Holmgren as being a mere beneficiary of having the reigning MVP take pressure from an opposing defense off him while on the hardwood, the Spurs star has made it a trend of his to run his mouth at the expense of his direct divisional rivals.
His most recent example of partaking in such an act came during a one-on-one interview with Ronnie 2K, where, when asked to piece together his ideal lineup of NBA 2K cover stars from 2017 through now, he unsurprisingly left last year's cover athlete, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, unmentioned.
Now, granted, this latest instance could be seen as a bit open-ended. After all, the question is largely based on personal preference.
However, when considering his long-standing track record of pointed slights at the Thunder, coupled with the fact that less accomplished and widely regarded as weaker players such as Devin Booker and Damian Lillard were named instead of the two-time MVP, historically efficient scorer, and NBA Champion SGA, it's hard not to believe this omission from Wemby wasn't personal.
Fans quick to call out Victor Wembanyama beef with Thunder
It seems many took to the comments section of the interview posted on X to call out Wembanyama for the snub of Gilgeous-Alexander.
One user was quick to call out the well-documented beef Wemby has with the Thunder, writing, "this man despises Shai."
Another user wrote point-blank, "Shai better than all of them."
With their off-court banter and intense on-court bouts, including seven in the high-stakes 2026 postseason, the Thunder and Spurs are rapidly becoming the league's most heated active rivalry.
Even OKC guard Cason Wallace has accepted such a narrative, revealing on a recent episode of Cousins with Vice Carter & Tracy McGrady that the Thunder and Spurs are "absolutely" a rivalry.
Needless to say, this latest snub only further strengthens the fact that their upcoming three-game regular-season series deserves to be branded as must-see TV.
Simply put, Wemby's continued pettiness should only make Thunder fans more eager to see this year's string of face-offs. Their first meet-up comes in primetime during the league's October 20 season tip-off.
