For years, the biggest knock against this OKC Thunder team has been their supposed reliance on favorable calls from officials.
Such a narrative has become so frequently buzzed about that it's now become a regular occurrence for players and coaches to publicly call out this perceived happening.
However, a recent finding may just be enough to finally squash these claims once and for all.
According to the social media account Fullcourtpass, their research shows that the Thunder rank in with the fifth-worst free-throw differential in the entire NBA over the last four seasons at minus-428.
Frankly, for those who have been remotely familiar with the club's FTA rates over the years, this shouldn't come as all that great of a surprise.
Since 2022-23, the Thunder have finished in the top-half of the league in free throw attempts just once and, in 2024-25, ranked as low as 26 with 20.4 foul shots per game.
Despite all of this evidence that points to the contrary, Oklahoma City is easily the most vilified team when it comes to the act of receiving whistles. In actuality, however, they simply don't get enough.
OKC Thunder don't foul bait despite what most care to believe
The Thunder are easily the most scrutinized team in the association when it comes to claims of foul baiting, with their cornerstone guard, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, seemingly serving as the mascot for such an act.
Yes, the two-time MVP certainly generates his fair share of visits to the charity stripe, but, at least to his father Vaughn, it's not a result of him trying to draw fouls, but rather beating his man off the dribble, and "because we beat you, you foul us."
Last season, Shai finished fourth in the association in foul shots per game with 9.0 and, throughout his seven seasons with the Thunder, has only placed in the top-three of said category twice.
In fact, to take things a step further when it comes to defending the Thunder superstar from this "free throw merchant" moniker, according to Kalshi Hoops, SGA has scored the most points in the NBA over the last three seasons without taking foul line activity into account.
So even though Gilgeous-Alexander may often find himself heading to the line, from both the advanced metrics and word of mouth around the league, he's without question one of the hardest talents for opposing players to defend in the game today.
One could argue this is the biggest reason why so many players wind up fouling him.
