2 teams Thunder fans should be rooting for during final stretch of season
Golden State Warriors
Rooting for Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson? Yuck! It’s definitely a nauseating decision given the bitter history between Golden State and Oklahoma City.
The Warriors are currently fighting tooth-and-nail with the Rockets for the final Play-In Tournament spot. Because Oklahoma City owns Houston’s first-round pick (top four protected), so they need the Rockets to lose this battle and finish with a worse record, thus improving the surrendered asset.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers are a massive threat to the Thunder in a potential playoff series.
Anthony Davis poses serious issues on both ends of the court, and it’s difficult to count out LeBron James during the postseason. Los Angeles also ranks seventh in catch-and-shoot effective field goal percentage (per NBA.com), and the Thunder allow too many wide-open looks from behind the arc.
It’s a matchup that Oklahoma City must avoid, and the easiest way is for the Lakers to be eliminated during the Play-In Tournament.
That’s where Golden State enters the scene, as they are more equipped than Houston is to knock out the Lakers.
Steph Curry and Klay Thompson can go nuclear anytime they touch the court, which doesn’t bode well for a Los Angeles squad that gives up the most wide-open three-point attempts per game.
In an ideal world, the Warriors secure a Play-In berth and eliminate the Lakers before quickly being dispatched by Oklahoma City in the first round.
However, this fantasy is not possible without Golden State first making the Play-In Tournament themselves, so Thunder fans must put aside emotions and back Stephen Curry and company for the final two weeks of the regular season.
