7 Free agents who should be on Thunder's wish list
By Tyler Watts
4. Klay Thompson
It is difficult to imagine Thompson not wearing a Warriors uniform. He is a crucial part of their dynasty. The five-time All-Star helped Golden State win four championships and is one-half of the Splash Brothers. Splitting him from Stephen Curry seems wrong, but it could happen this summer.
Thompson is on a $43.2 million expiring contract. The two sides have not been able to agree on an extension, and Klay will become an unrestricted free agent this summer if a deal is not reached. He wants to remain with the Warriors (subscription required), but it may just not be in the cards. If the two sides split, there will be no shortage of interest in the veteran sharpshooter.
Thompson is no longer at his peak. He remains an elite shooter and floor spacer, but there has been slippage on both ends of the floor. The 6’7 wing is no longer a lockdown defender. He can still make an impact and would add some needed championship experience to the young Thunder.
Could Klay Thompson be the missing piece in Oklahoma City? He does not need the ball and is comfortable in his role. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would have even more space on the floor for his drives playing next to Klay. Prying him away from the Bay Area won’t be easy, but it could help the Thunder bring a championship back to OKC.
