Rivalry week! A cool NBA gimmick that is a week-long event of fun, interesting matchups. The Oklahoma City Thunder were paired with the San Antonio Spurs as part of the Rivalry week to get Chet Holmgren against Victor Wembanyama on ESPN.
As the two generational big men prospects battled it out, the OKC Thunder ran away with this game 140-114. This was the second time the Thunder beat down the Spurs on National Television this season, though not as bad as the first matchup when TNT stopped carrying the game in the middle of the fourth quarter.
OKC Thunder blew out the San Antonio Spurs for the second time this season, but as Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama go back and forth, Social Media is ablaze.
This game saw Chet Holmgren turn in 17 points, haul in nine rebounds, dish out four assists, swipe a steal, and swat four shots against San Antonio in 30 minutes. Holmgren shot 53 percent from the floor, 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, and 1-for-3 from the free throw line.
Victor Wembanyama was able to break loose for 24 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, a steal, and four blocks shooting 50 percent from the floor, 0-for-3 from distance, and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe.
However, this game really got going in the later stages of this blowout, as Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren began to go back and forth against each other. As the game evolved into a Holmgren vs Wembanyama show for a brief period, NBA social media was set ablaze.
The Rookie of the Year award is going to be debated from now until the end of the season when the hardware is handed out, but so far, in the head-to-head matchups and season-long sample size, Holmgren has the record advantage decisively.
With the two playings fairly, even statistically, it will come down to how much the voters weigh team success when it comes to discussing rookies and efficiency.
Luckily for the sake of the league, neither player did anything to stamp their name on the trophy tonight, while still putting on a good show making the next two times these big men match up even more exciting.
