The Western Conference has already begun to heat up. The San Antonio Spurs already proved that they are a real threat – they beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals this past year. And now, the entire West is seemingly loading up to take down Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama. Just look at all the rumors going around the league.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have already traded for LaMelo Ball, positioning themselves as a big-time threat. And now, based on Michael Scotto of HoopsHype’s latest intel dump, the Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, and LA Clippers are all interested in a Jaylen Brown trade with the Boston Celtics.
The West knows that they have to add if they want to take down the Thunder and Spurs.
The West is loading up to beat SGA and Wemby
For all of this past regular season, the Thunder and Spurs were ahead of the pack. They were the best two teams in the West by a landslide, and everybody knew it.
When the playoffs came around, that reality became even clearer. The Blazers took a game off the Spurs, and the Wolves won two against them (though an ejection had a part in that), but San Antonio was dominant.
As for the Thunder, they didn’t lose a single playoff game until they met the Spurs in the Western Conference finals, making it even clearer what the pecking order in the West is: Spurs and Thunder, then everyone else.
So, the West decided to get to work this summer. It realized that if any other team wanted a chance at beating SGA and Wembanyama, it had to go after some serious talent this summer.
The Timberwolves have been one of the best teams in the West for years, but they began the offseason with a bang, trading for Ball to play next to Anthony Edwards.
That should make a huge difference for them because now, they have the point guard they’ve always wanted. Plus, they retained Ayo Dosunmu in free agency.
Meanwhile, the Nuggets, Blazers, and Clippers are all reportedly interested in Brown. If any of those three teams were to land him, they would immediately become a much bigger threat to the Thunder and Spurs.
Everyone knows who the teams to beat are. And everyone knows that, if they want a chance, they have to make some serious moves.
It’s the Thunder and Spurs’ world, and the rest of the West is gunning for them.
