The Oklahoma City Thunder have given Cason Wallace the proverbial keys to drive his own future forward. Widely expected to sign a fairly lucrative extension, Wallace is a prime candidate to replace Luguentz Dort in the starting lineup after Oklahoma City traded the defensive specialist to the Atlanta Hawks.
Though Wallace will need to check many of the same boxes, the Thunder must also allow him to grow outside of the role that Dort played or risk stifling his development as an all-around player.
Dort was a fantastic contributor to Oklahoma City, offering lockdown defense and respectable three-point shooting. Wallace will ideally provide the same if he starts, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're carbon copies of one another as players.
Dort was more of an off-ball offensive player who dominated in on-ball situations defensively, whereas Wallace is an elite ball hawk, as well as a shot creator and playmaker on offense.
With this in mind, the Thunder must position Wallace to explore his potential outside of the Dort role. That could prove challenging in a starting lineup that already has Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams, but it's an essential step toward optimizing Wallace's impact.
If Wallace can continue to thrive defensively and improve his jump shot for off-ball situations, then empowering him to explore his full potential as a shot creator would be the best path to maximizing his impact and realizing his potential.
Cason Wallace isn't a Lu Dort carbon copy—and shouldn't be restricted
Dort leaves a massive void to fill in the starting lineup after ranking No. 1 in the NBA in perimeter isolation defense in 2025-26, per Basketball Index. That's consistent with his reputation as an elite on-ball defender who can make life miserable for even top-tier scorers and playmakers.
Wallace is thankfully qualified to fill his shoes after ranking in the 95th percentile in the same statistic and placing No. 3 in the NBA in off-ball chaser defense.
That doesn't mean they're identical players, though. For instance, Wallace ranked in the 76th percentile in rim shot creation compared to Dort finishing in the 39th percentile, per Basketball Index. Wallace also averaged 5.4 drives in 26.6 minutes per game compared to Dort's 2.7 in 26.8.
Furthermore, Wallace ranked in the 64th percentile in ball dominance, while Dort placed in the 30th. He placed in the 74th percentile in passing creation volume compared to Dort in the 34th.
Thunder must allow Cason Wallace to naturally develop into the player he's becoming
Even defensively, Wallace averaged 2.6 steals per 36 minutes compared to Dort's 1.2 in 2025-26. That illustrates how Wallace's value as an on-ball defender must not prevent him from continuing to create chaos in the passing lanes.
Preventing him from doing so in order to latch him onto opposing teams' best scorers would limit his impact, even if it would fill an essential role.
To put it plainly, Wallace is an attacking ball-handler who creates for his teammates, aspires to finish at the rim, and is one of the most dangerous ball hawks in the NBA. He needs to improve his efficiency as a shooter and finisher, but to box him into Dort's more limited role would be tantamount to preventing the 22-year-old from exploring his upside and developing his game.
Wallace will need to fill in for Dort as an elite on-ball defender and improve his catch-and-shoot efficiency, but he must also be allowed to play the style that's made him so dynamic.
