It's no mystery that the OKC Thunder needed star forward Jalen Williams badly, both in the regular season and the postseason. General manager Sam Presti reiterated this in his first offseason press conference when he expressed his disappointment in the team's inability to develop as a unit amid the injuries.
J-Dub was at the core of this issue, playing in just 38 games over the course of both the regular season and the playoffs. It was his end-of-year interview, however, that might unnerve the Thunder faithful, especially after Presti's sentiments.
"You know, that’s a good question. I don’t know if I’ve figured it out if I’ve messed it up every single time so far. If I’m being honest," Dub said.
The former Santa Clara standout has long been known for his brutal honesty during media availability, and it was on full display in this one. But his comments, paired with Presti's own frustrations, could not make for a more ominous combination.
Thunder's GM aired out frustrations that his players have no answer for
Thunder fans now find themselves in a situation where their general manager has made his desire for the team crystal clear, and the team simply doesn't have a tangible solution.
Presti isn't wrong after all. What many fans likely overlooked throughout the season is that, while their stars were busy nursing injuries, Mark Daigneault was trying to piece non-playoff rotations together.
Talent aside, there is a team aspect to playing winning basketball. Numerous injuries severely inhibited this Thunder team from mastering that element. Now that their general manager and leader are calling upon them to improve in that arena, at least one player is expressing the fact that he doesn't know how.
Williams' hamstring troubles weren't the only roadblocks down the stretch. Ajay Mitchell played in only 57 games during the regular season and ended up missing the latter part of the Western Conference Finals. Having dealt with numerous soft-tissue injuries already in his short career, fans are left wondering if he will ever be able to play a full season.
Thunder's Sam Presti might have to face reality if nothing changes
With injuries becoming more of a trend than an exception, Presti might have no choice but to change course. If so, he'd better do so quickly, as Jalen Williams is set to make over $41 million beginning next season.
One thing is certain. The Thunder have been unable to keep their core players on the court for an entire season over the past two years. With the San Antonio Spurs looking to run the West for a long time, OKC will need all the floor time they can get with each other if they wish to topple the new conference champs.
Jalen Williams' offseason priority will likely be figuring out why his soft-tissue problems continue to flare up. If he doesn't come up with a solution before the 2026-27 season, Sam Presti could find himself watching the same story for the third year in a row.
