As most of you know, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant becomes a free agent this Friday. It’s a pretty big story in the NBA world. It’s also a pretty big story around the Litchfield Penitentiary. Durant, currently wearing orange, will don a black jersey for a week or so as he tried to decide where he’ll play basketball next season. In honor of his impending free agency, the ladies of Litchfield wrote Durant a nice little song, which I’ve decoded for you all.

The animals, the animals
Trapped, trapped, trapped ’till the cage is full
The cage is full

The animals, in this case, are the suitors who are lined up for Kevin Durant. There is no shortage of them. Along with the Thunder, the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, and Houston Rockets all want Durant on their team. Some are realistic options. Some are not. But the cage is certainly full of animals pining after the lone superstar on the free agent market.

Stay awake
In the dark, count mistakes
The light was off but now it’s on

Durant is likely growing restless throughout this process and it hasn’t even started. As he lies in bed, he’s no doubt going through the list in his head. He’s thinking about the teams that are a mistake and the teams that are a fit. The light may not be fully illuminated just yet, but it will be soon.

Searching in the ground for a bitter song
The sun is out, the day is new

It’ll be a new day as Durant will wake up and find 29 other teams booty.

And everyone is waiting, waiting on you
And you’ve got time
And you’ve got time

We’re all waiting on Durant. Fans, teams, teammates, the league, etc…. We’re all waiting on him because once he decides, everything else will fall into place. He has time, but not much. With Durant set to take part in the Olympics, his mind will likely be made up by July 9th when he boards a plane for a publicity tour in the Far East.

More from Thunderous Intentions

Think of all the roads
Think of all their crossings

Think of all the possibilities. All the ways this could play out. Durant could stay in Oklahoma City, the only NBA city he’s ever truly known, and help deliver the franchise their first title. Or he could go elsewhere. Be part of a potential dynasty with the Warriors, prolong the Spurs dynasty, bring the Celtics or Knicks or Lakers back to glory, be a Clippers legend by getting them out of the second round. Plenty of roads. Plenty of crossing.

Taking steps is easy
Standing still is hard

It would be easy to go to the Warriors or Spurs. Those teams already have titles with core pieces intact. Staying in Oklahoma City would actually be the hardest thing to do because there is no championship history. Durant and company have been close, but they’ve never got it done. Durant knows what he has in OKC and he knows that, as of today, it hasn’t been good enough. He could take the easy path and walk away or he can make the tough decision to stay put.

Remember all their faces
Remember all their voices

KD must remember these meetings and what he’s been told. Then he must separate fact from fiction.

Everything is different
The second time around

This only applies to OKC’s pitch and plays off of the previous couple of lines. Will everything truly be different for Durant, the second time around? How much better is the team? Most believe that they got better with the Serge Ibaka trade, but some believe that it was a mistake. Will Durant sign a long-term deal knowing that Russell Westbrook is a free agent next season? OKC will no doubt give KD the most to think about.
