The Ol’ College Try

Billy Donovan, Bill Self, Kevin Ollie, etc.,
The thing about most college coaches (a big emphasis on most) is their love of control. The college game is one where the coaches are more famous than the players, and that’s the way the coaches like it. There’s an obvious reason for this – players are at a school for a maximum of four years, while coaches can survive decades at a single school – but it holds true nonetheless.

Ollie might be the exception as he has fewer ties in Connecticut than Donovan and Self have at their respective schools, but he was groomed as the coach in waiting by former Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun.

Ollie and Donovan seem to be the leaders in the clubhouse at this moment, but don’t be surprised to see that change.
