OKC Thunder Thoughts: A Trade is Coming
Weekly thoughts and musings on the OKC Thunder.
Game of Thrones fans have heard the phrase “Winter is Coming” roughly nine million times since the first episode of the hit HBO series. Normal people think of winter as a cold and snowy time, but it always appears to be cold and snowy in Game of Thrones. Either winter has already arrived and these idiots don’t know any better, or winter means something completely different in the Game of Thrones universe. I’m under the belief that Winter is this mythological time that doesn’t actually exist, it’s just a cool phrase that everyone likes to say.
They chose winter because it’s such a cold and miserable period and that’s what they want to allude to. Again, everyone seems cold and miserable in Game of Thrones, so I’m 99% sure Winter has been there all along and 98% sure that’s the big plot twist.
I’m 97% sure that the final scene of the show will be a young boy standing next to Jon Snow, looking out at a bunch of miserable people doing battle in the cold and snow. The young boy will say, “Winter is coming.” He doesn’t actually know what this means, but he’s heard it so many times that he feels it is the appropriate time to say it. Jon Snow then looks down on him, and says, “No, my friend. Winter has been here all along.” And then the scene fades to white or Jon Snow chops the boys head off because it’s Game of Thrones and, when in doubt, cut off a head.

None of this relates to the Oklahoma City Thunder. I just had this idea to play “A Trade is Coming” with “Winter is Coming” and then just started writing a Game of Thrones theory. I’m 100% sure Tony will edit that out. *note from Tony: I have never taken out sections of Jeremy’s content, that would only be unfair to the readers.
“A Trade is Coming” in Oklahoma City though. It’s almost a certainty that Sam Presti will make a deal, likely for a scoring forward, to help improve the team in the second half of the season. We don’t know who Presti will acquire, we just know it will happen.
Thunder fans have heard a lot of names thrown around since the start of the season. The name with the most traction was Rudy Gay, who seemingly had his bags packed to Oklahoma City prior to Cam Payne’s injury. Along with Gay, we’ve heard logical names like Otto Porter Jr., Danilo Gallinari, and Wilson Chandler thrown around. Absurd names like Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Love. Not quite absurd but questionable names like Carmelo Anthony. And dream names like Paul George.
Let me throw a “quite absurd and extremely unlikely” name at you: Andrew Wiggins.

I realize that the Minnesota Timberwolves are very unlikely to trade Wiggins, and I don’t think OKC has enough to get him anyway. Although, Tom Thibodeau is looking for a defensive anchor and if Sam Presti pieces together a strong Andre Roberson highlight reel, Thibs might make a one-for-one swap. I only mention Wiggins because the Timberwolves are underperforming, and Thibs isn’t going to sit idly by for long. He’s going to want results at some point, and if he doesn’t get them soon, he might be willing to deal one of his promising stars.
If Wiggins is available, the whole league will be calling about him. But that’s the thing about Presti, he’s making calls before guys officially become available. “A Trade is Coming.” But was the trade there all along?
And you thought I couldn’t tie it together.
Other Thunder Thoughts For The Week
*The Atlanta game looked like a sure disappointment. OKC Thunder playing a little too well. The Hawks playing a little too bad. But fortunately, Russell Westbrook has found half a clutch gene early in the season. That might be the most surprising thing about the Thunder thus far. Westbrook is hitting a lot of fourth quarter shots. I’d still prefer him to not feel the need to shoot a dagger three in the closing moments, but Russ is gonna Russ.
*We’re still talking about Victor Oladipo’s dunk, right? As Westbrook said, “about time.” Oladipo is proving his worth as a defender and shooter, but with his athleticism and speed, I really want to see him attack the basket and get the free throw line more.
*Is Kyle Singler officially out of the rotation? I probably jinxed it. Expect him to play 30 minutes against Houston. Someone has to slow down Harden.
