Comparison of the Big O versus Westbrook:

Putting this accomplishment in perspective is difficult. Although it’s been 55 years since Robertson set the benchmark, devil’s advocates argue how much easier it is for Westbrook.

But is that true?

In some ways, there is relevance to the pessimist’s argument given the increased scoring, pace, and amount of 3-point shots going up this season.  But, the truth is, in the era, Robertson played his Cincinnati Royals played at a faster pace. To wit, Robertson’s Royals played with a pace of 124.9 ranks fifth in the League. Conversely, the Thunder utilizes a pace of 97.9 ranks eighth in the NBA. For those counting that’s 27 more possessions per 100.

The other key factor in the Robertson versus Westbrook comparison is the amount of time they played. Robertson played close to ten minutes more per game (+9.6 minutes).

Imagine what Westbrook’s numbers would be if he played an additional ten minutes or 21.7 percent more.  Perhaps this isn’t a solid argument as it’s difficult to fathom Russell Westbrook playing that much, especially given his full out, take no prisoners style.

Taking this a step further, it’s reasonable to assume Westbrook would have worn down if he played more than his current 34.7 minutes per game.

Ultimately, the two eras were so different it’s impossible to compare Robertson and Westbrook beyond one straight forward fact – – only two players in history have averaged a triple-double. This assuming Westbrook garners three more triple-doubles and maintains his current average.
